Shopping for a special-occasion dress can be a daunting task, whether you are 16 or 65. If you’re anything like me, you start to feel lost in the racks and racks of chiffon and tulle in the big department stores, and fighting for a parking spot and a dressing room can be such a pain. That’s why I was so excited when someone recommended I check out Little Black Dress Boutique, just as we’re coming upon a season of holiday parties, winter formals and New Year’s Eve balls!
Little Black Dress Boutique is an adorable, locally-owned store at the Fig Tree Plaza shopping center on Bullard & West in Fresno. They specialize in formal gowns, as well as bridesmaid and mother-of-the-bride dresses, in black and all sorts of other colors.
The real beauty of Little Black Dress Boutique is that it makes dress shopping fun. The girls who work there specialize as dress consultants who will help you pick out just the perfect thing. The center of the store has a couch and big mirrors (much like you might find at a bridal boutique). It’s the perfect place to bring a few girlfriends to spend an afternoon trying on dresses!
Everything in the store is under $300, which is impressive considering the array of dresses with intricate beading, lace and other fine details. When I visited the boutique, there was even a rack of pretty dresses on sale for $20! There’s also a selection of shoes and jewelry to complete your look.
The other thing I love about Little Black Boutique is the way owner Keri Frazier gives back to the community. Recently, the store held a “Dream Dress Drive,” where women who brought their old prom and formal dresses to donate to charity received a $25 coupon towards their next purchase at Little Black Dress Boutique.
The store also runs a scholarship program for local high school girls. Students who are accepted into the program must demonstrate that they are leaders in school, work or their community with an essay and an interview. The chosen girls (there are nine this year) must complete community service hours and become LBD “ambassadors” who work at the Dream Dress Drive and give their input on local trends and styles for the store. Ambassadors are given modeling opportunities and a 50% discount on purchases. At the end of the year, one girl is chosen by the LBD staff for a $500 scholarship.
So no matter what special formal occasion you might be shopping for this holiday season, I encourage you to drop by Little Black Dress Boutique. You’ll find some beautiful gowns and feel good in knowing that you’re supporting such a community-oriented store!
