October is here, which means it’s finally appropriate to start thinking about your Halloween costumes – although I totally don’t blame you if you’ve had this year planned out since November 1, 2013.
For those of you who aren’t so extra prepared, I’ve got some thoughts to get you started. Halloween is SO not just for kids!
Ladies, Don’t Just Default to the Sexy Route
You know that scene in “Mean Girls” where Lindsay Lohan’s character shows up as a vampire bride, and all of the other girls are wearing skimpy clothes and animal ears? I am Lindsay Lohan in this scenario.
I am a staunch believer in getting weird and creative on Halloween. It’s the one day a year where I actually push fashion aside and try to get as ridiculous as possible. I present to you, “That Time I Dressed Up as a Turkey Dinner,” “That Time People Kept Popping Grapes in Tower,” and “That Time We Won The Work Costume Contest as Mario & Luigi” (the least weird of the three).
Don’t be afraid to think outside the box! Bypass those animals ears and fishnet stockings! Think about the things you like. Get on Internet if you need some inspiration. Wander local Halloween, craft and thrift stores.
By the way, even if you don’t want to try too hard, there ARE, in fact, costumes out there for women that don’t show all the goods. The local Halloween stores have a surprisingly good variety. Special thank you to “Orange Is the New Black?” Haha.
You Don’t Have to Spend A Hundred Dollars
Or even fifty dollars! There are plenty of options if you’re looking to save.
Start at thrift and vintage stores. There are a plethora of great ones around town! Many of them will often carry costumes at vastly discounted prices. Thrift and vintage stores are also great places to find the clothes to start off your look, especially if you’re going for a decade theme. Find a poodle skirt, a seventies shirt or an old flapper dress, and pair it with the necessary accessories. You can usually get kits at local Halloween stores or Target and Wal-Mart for reasonable prices. (Tip: If you’re looking for a wig, the big box stores are the cheapest, but the Halloween stores have better selections.)
Or think about what you have around the house to make your ideas work. For example, my friend at ValleyPBS dressed as Cat in the Hat last year … mostly so she could wear her sweats to the office. 🙂
Group Costumes FTW, Always
You know what’s better than one bunch of grapes? Bunches of grapes! (Although how overshadowed are we by the other costume in this photo?)
Anyway, my point is, I love, love, love group costumes, whether it’s friends, a family or a couple. It’s so fun to share the experience, and it opens up a whole other world of possibilities.
You can go the hardcore (and adorable) route, like my friend Cristy, or you can go for the economical option. Group costumes out of the bag cost pretty much the same as individual costumes, and you can split the cost two or three ways!
So those are a few my costume tips and ideas. I would love to hear some of yours! Post in the comments below!
