Shaver lake Summer Day Trip
With the school year starting back up again, and both my kiddo’s life and my own work life revolving heavily around the busy times of the school year – the past two weeks have been a bit stressful. Ok, very stressful. So, when my husband’s company was gracious enough to invite all of the employees to go to Shaver Lake for a boating and picnic day, I was simultaneously excited and overwhelmed. How could I take a full day away from my very heavy work load to just enjoy a day at the lake?
I cannot begin to say how wonderfully restorative and downright fun that lake day was. It was exactly the experience our entire family needed to recharge and feel like ourselves again. It was so great, that I wanted to take this opportunity to encourage you to take advantage of the final weeks of summer and our warm early fall season, and plan a day at Shaver Lake for your own family or group of friends.
My husband’s supervisor thoughtfully planned the day so well. Here’s what made for such an awesome day (Thank you TM!):
- Rent a pontoon boat from Sierra Marina
- Sierra Marina is the back marina on the lake, so not the first marina you see while driving up 168, but the second (larger) one
- Several sizes are available, depending on your group size, and pricing varies depending on how long you’d like to use a boat. A 12 passenger boat can be as little as $11/person for half a day or $22.50/person for all day use. (Pricing can be found online here.)
- Wave runners, fishing boats, jet skis, kayaks, ski boats and water skiing equipment are also rental options from Sierra Marina
- Bring along a picnic lunch, drinks and tasty snacks and head out early to stake out a beach area of your own along the shore
- We enjoyed a great, sandy beach area with plenty of room to play and swim along the backside of the lake
- Pack games like Squash and Bocce Ball, a portable speaker and inflatables for the water
A few tips to ensure things go well:
- All children on boats/water equipment must wear a life vest at all times when on the water (they do come with your rentals)
- Don’t forget sunscreen and bags for trash (bring a few more bags than you think you’ll need)
- Pop up tents/EZ Ups make for a more pleasant beach experience if available
- There aren’t restrooms around the shore, other than at the marina, so know that you’ll either need to head back on the boat to use the bathroom or hike into the woods a bit, au natural style (read: remind kids and the small bladdered folks in your crew to go before you head out on the water) Ladies who are willing to go into the woods, but find it difficult may appreciate having something like this inexpensive but helpful device (that I won’t go into detail on here, but will vouch for its effectiveness, as it was something a few of us learned about when we began hiking for fun last year)
Now that you know how to prepare for an awesome day at the lake, please, take this advice from someone who needed it herself – you need one more great summer adventure before you accept the business of the months ahead, so plan a day at Shaver Lake! It’s just an hour away, and such a wonderful way to spend the day with those you love.
