January is typically Fresno’s coldest month so it can be a bit trickier to plan fun, family activities – however, here at FresYes, we’ve found five really fun things for you to enjoy with your favorite people (big and small) this month in or around the Fresno area.
1. Go ice skating in Downtown Fresno
Most people have heard about the outdoor Fresno ice skating rink on Fulton mall – but just in case you haven’t – I felt it was still worth a mention. I love that the Downtown folks work hard to bring us an outdoor ice rink to enjoy and hope all Fresno families will have a chance to enjoy it before the season ends on January 19th. The ice rink opens daily at 11am. For prices, location and other details, visit the ice rink’s website. Also, kids who are part of the ValleyPBS Family Circle and love the Cat in the Hat will have a chance to meet him when he makes an appearance at the rink on January 17th. (For more info on that, click here.)
2. Go sledding near Yosemite National Park
Located just about an hour outside of Fresno (give or take depending on winter road conditions) is an awesome, free snow play area that’s fantastic for sledding, tubing, snowball fights and snowman building. “Goat Meadow” offers a gentle slope for little ones and multiple more exciting sledding areas for older kids. Look for signs just above Fish Camp, CA near the Yosemite Park Entrance (take 41 North out of town and stay on it until you see the sign). The mile-long road to the park will require snow chains or 4-wheel drive, so be prepared.
3. Go on a guided snowshoeing trek
Families with older children might enjoy the great outdoors on a guided snowshoe trek through Kings Canyon National Forest. These free tours meet at the John Muir Lodge on Saturdays from January 3rd through April 1 (weather permitting) at 1pm and last approximately 2 hours. You’ll see giant sequoias or possibly an amazing view from atop a scenic dome. Either way – it sounds gorgeous! 14 pairs of snowshoes are available on a first come, first serve basis – so get there a little early. The John Muir Lodge is located at 86728 Highway 180 Kings Canyon, CA 93633.
4. Go see the Harlem Globetrotters
The famous and amazing Harlem Globetrotters will be in town performing mind boggling basketball feats at the Save Mart Center on Thursday, January 15th at 7pm. They always put on a fantastic show that’s entertaining to people of all ages. For ticket prices and information, click here.
5. Enjoy Disney on Ice
This year’s show “Let’s Celebrate!” will be in town and performing at the Selland Arena beginning Wednesday, January 28th and concluding shows on Sunday, February 2nd. Weekday shows are at 7pm and over the weekend an 11am and 3pm show are also offered. For tickets and additional info, visit Ticket Center online here.
