Between work, t-ball practice, and dance recitals sometimes date night with your significant other can be a little tough to make happen. A night out that doesn’t include a miniature toy that you throw away the next day is rare, so when you get the opportunity, you hire the babysitter and head off into the warm Fresno night. Now what to do? If a great meal and unique experience that won’t cost you a mortgage payment sound good, then Fresno’s Tower District, specifically Roger Rocka’s Dinner Theater, is the place for you.
For the last thirty-nine years, talented actors and actresses from Good Company Players have put on well-known musical plays inside the legendary Roger Rocka’s Dinner Theater. This year’s calendar includes Hairspray, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The Sound of Music, Calamity Jane, Singing In The Rain, & Beehive.
When you first arrive, you are welcomed and seated by their friendly staff. Wine, beer, and specialty drinks themed around the night’s performance (The Mother Abbess is delicious!), are offered from your server. You then choose your meal from several delectable options; all prepared by the talented and well known executive chef Eric DeGroot, I had the filet which was cooked to perfection. If you don’t reserve a romantic table for two then you will most likely be siting with people you don’t know… yet! Before the show begins and during intermission is a great time to meet someone new. Reach out and introduce yourself, you never know who it could be. The person across from me was in town for just the week from Italy and their guest chose to take them to Roger Rocka’s (my inspiration for this month’s article).
Once dinner is complete you’re treated to a pre-show of sorts with kids from the Good Company Players’ Junior Company. This expressive and uplifting group of children is a good representation of the talent both Fresno and the Good Company Players can expect to see in the future.
The main attraction then begins and immediately the audience is folded into a world where they can laugh, cry, and sometimes even sing along. When my wife and I managed the opportunity for ‘date night’, we were fortunate enough to catch a musical from one of her favorite movies while growing up, The Sound of Music. It was a wonderful experience that brought back great memories for her. For me it was major points scored 😉
Not every city is as fortunate as Fresno; it’s like having Broadway in your own backyard. I urge you to take advantage of it, and to call in advance for reservations at 559-266-9494
