It’s not hard to find an almond tree in these parts. Surrounding Fresno like a green ocean, almond orchards have been sprouting up like crazy in our valley.
California produces most of the world’s almond crop, and the city of Kerman plays a big role in that feat. Surrounded by almond farms, and also home to Panoche Creek Packing and Holland Hulling, almonds go from grower to grocery store thanks to this little town south of Fresno.
So, it makes sense that in recent years, Kerman has started celebrating this miraculous little nut with an annual Almond Festival. And on Saturday, May 6, you can join the fun and celebrate local agriculture at this family event.
Things To Do at the Kerman Almond Festival
This is the third year of Kerman’s almond-themed festivities, and you won’t want to miss it. Not only are there bounce houses, there’s a baking contest and a beer booth. Basically, there’s something for every member of the family at this event.
One of the main features of this festival is the 5K Scholarship Fun Walk/Run. If you’re interested, you can sign up here. There’s even a kids run if you want to make it a family thing. Every participant gets a shirt and proceeds go to an agriculture scholarship fund. Cost for this is $25 for the walk/run and $10 for the kids run.
Additionally, there’s an agriculture-themed photography contest, so grab your camera and find a field. First prize is the honor of having your photo featured in the Sebastian Corp phone book, so don’t miss out on the opportunity.
However, if you’d rather just eat festival food and admire photographs, that’s a viable option too. Or you might start dancing thanks to live music from the Marie Wilson Band and the Twilighters.
Of course, no Almond Festival would be complete without reptiles. Reptile Ron will be in attendance, and, to double down on the animal excitement, so will the Host of Heavens Petting Zoo. Add pony rides and wine tasting, and you’re all set to go nuts celebrating all things almond.
