Fresno event planners, artisans, and educators have been hard at work creating awesome new opportunities for fellow Fresnans to learn new skills, meet new people, and create something special.
Hopefully, you were able to try out at least one new skill in the early part of the year from my previous post, “5 things to learn in the new year.” If not, don’t worry, because I now have for you five fantastic things you can learn before the end of spring!
Check out the list below, and let me know in the comments what you try—I’d love to hear about your experiences!
1. Make beautiful custom jewelry with FresLoCA
Have you ever wanted to learn to create beautiful jewelry you’d actually be proud to wear? Lauren Lum, local jewelry artist, will walk you through the process of creating a gorgeous pair of delicate, wire-wrapped earrings at the Urban Umbrella in Clovis on Thursday, May 24, at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for the class are $45 and all necessary materials are included. Reserve your spot via Eventbrite here.

2. Create a stained glass succulent
Learn the art of stained glass from instructor Chelsea Brewer of Brewer and Marr Glassworks on Saturday, June 2. The class will provide snacks, drinks, and all the materials and assistance needed to create your own stained glass succulent or cactus for hanging in your window. Brewer’s stained glass is sold in Ojai, San Luis Obispo, Phoenix, Denver, and Durham, NC, but this special class will be offered right here in Fresno at Root on Fulton Street. 3. Learn hip hop line dancing
Taught by Shawuana Himes at Studio 65, this fun, fast-moving cardio dance class takes place every Thursday through June 28 at 7:30 p.m. According to Himes, this class is beginner friendly and incorporates motions that repeat throughout routines to make it easy to learn and a fantastic workout. Drop-in classes are just $5. For more info, check out the Facebook event here.

Horn Photo will be hosting a free portrait photography class taught by professional photographer Ben Hutchinson on Monday, May 28, from 12-2 p.m. This class will teach photographers from beginners and beyond creative ways to take portraits using Tamron lenses. Reserve your spot in the class through Eventbrite here.
5. Learn self defense
The Fresno School of Self Defense is offering women a free class on Sunday, May 20 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at their 3333 W. Sussex location. Participants will learn the skills and techniques actually required to escape a dangerous situation, should the need ever arise. Participants should dress in athletic clothing and be prepared to move around throughout the class. If the May 20 date doesn’t work for you, there will be an additional class offered on June 10.
