Last week, I wrote about a cat rescue and angry letters have been pouring in from dog people. “What about the pups that need a good home? Is FresYes only for cats?”
Just kidding. No one posted a single comment. However, that doesn’t mean I didn’t hear the silent groans of dog people throughout FresYes, wondering when their day would come.
Dog people, today is your day. I’m writing to tell you that Valley Animal Center is holding its 5th Annual Super Adoption event Saturday, May 13. If you’re in the market for a best friend, set your alarm for 9 a.m. and head over to the center for a cool canine experience (okay, they also have cats).
At least 14 rescue agencies will be there with every type of dog imaginable. I’ve said before I’m a cat person, but I still hold a candle for puppies. My favorite thing about dogs is their variety — you can find them in every shape and size. Big ones, small ones, some as big as your head… it’s true for both dogs and coconut bunches. From Lab Rescue to Fresno Bully Rescue, you can visit with all manner of breeds and see if there’s a pup for you (spoiler alert: there totally is).
Of course, if you’re like me, you might already have a dog. If your canine quota is full, this is still a fun event to support. Admission is free and there will be food trucks and vendors. You could treat it like a puppy parade and eat treats from Casa de Tamales or Raw Fresno. If you think 9 a.m. is an early start time for a Saturday, Dutch Bros. has your back. Or you could just get a sugar rush from Sno Cafe to get started. The point is, this isn’t just a furry feast, there’s food, too.
“What if it gets hot?” you ask. Fair question, as Fresno can be toasty. Luckily, the Valley Animal Center folks have provided a water slide for the kids as well as a face painting station. If just staring at cute dogs isn’t your thing, there will be doggie demonstrations by local trainers. This is your chance to figure out why Fido won’t fetch (spoiler alert, part 2: It’s probably your fault).
Last year, there were around 900 people in attendance, and 80 pet adoptions. This year they’re shooting for 100 adoptions, so they need your help. A day of food, fun, and furry friends isn’t the worst way to spend a Saturday. Plus, you’ll be helping out a great cause (animal rescue!) AND there are raffle tickets. You may even find your new best friend.
If you’re looking for a dog (or a good time), the Super Adoption event Facebook page is here.
