Still wondering what to do with your kids this summer? Recently I compiled a list of popular summer camp options in the area (you can find it here), but there’s more to explore!
Thanks to Fresno State, it’s not hard to keep your kids entertained and educated during summer vacation. The university is offering a wide variety of summer camps this year. With topics ranging from sports science to Mandarin Chinese, you’ll be sure to find something that interests your child.
If you’re interested in enrolling your child in an educational experience this summer, here are some options:
• Summer Sports Writing Camp (July 9-13)
This is available for kids entering 5th to 8th grade. In addition to playing indoor and outdoor sports, your student will write poetry inspired by sports. This is a great way for kids to express themselves, with narrative writing about sports also included. The fee for this camp is $175 ($150 for additional kids) and you can register here.
• Youth Technology Institute (June 11-14 and July 16-18)
If you have a child in 1st to 8th grade who likes computers, this camp is for them. Not only will it introduce students to the Engineering Design Process through STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), there’s also an emphasis in problem-based, hands-on activities. There will be teamwork as well, as they compete to solve challenges. Coding, robotics, aeronautics, and the latest technology will all be used. If your child likes to problem solve and muck around with robots, consider this camp. The course aligns with Next Generations Science Standards, so sign up your budding scientist via email here. The fee is $25 per student and you can call (559) 278-0293 for more information.
• STARTALK Chinese Immersion Camp (June 11-29)
If you’re looking for excitement, why not enroll in an NSA-funded program?! Fresno STARTALK will expose students to Mandarin Chinese and the Chinese culture through martial arts, music, and crafts. The last day of camp will cumulate with a field trip to San Francisco’s Asian Art Museum and Chinatown. The fee for this course $30 per student. You can email FresnoSTARTALK@gmail.com for more information.
• Ag Summer Kids Camp (July 16-20)
For kids ages 5-10, farming can be in their future this summer. Since we’re in the Central Valley, AKA America’s Breadbasket, why not take time to introduce your kids to where their food comes from? Camp lessons will focus on how crops grow and food production. Crafts, hands-on activities, and tours of the dairy, horticulture, orchard and vegetable units are in the cards for campers. You can register at the campus horticulture nursery website here or call (559) 278-2952 for more info.
• Sports Science Camp (June 11-15)
This camp is for high school students in the Fresno Unified School District. It’s hosted by the Department of Kinesiology and the Central California Sports Science Institute at Fresno State. For one week in June, students will learn about careers in kinesiology through an immersive program. Physical education, exercise sciences, athletic training, and sports psychology are all included in this camp. For more information, call Dr. Luke Pryor at email@example.com or (559)278-2990.
• Sports Camps
Sports and summertime go together like peanut butter and jelly. If you’re wondering where to find a sports camp, look no further than Fresno State. From swimming to football, wrestling to softball, there’s a sport camp to fit your need. I cannot even begin to list all the options here so do yourself a favor and click click here to see all of Fresno State’s sport camp options.
