Around this time in January, it can be hard to think of thrilling winter activities. We’ve passed Christmas, but it’s too cold for lounging around the pool.
Thankfully, there’s still hockey.
If you’re looking for fun for the whole family (or just for yourself), grab something green and head to a Fresno Monsters game. Fresno’s hockey team has been going strong at Gateway Ice Center all season, but big plans are brewing, and they’ll spend the last three games of the season tearing through Selland Arena.
The games at the Gateway Ice Center are always a fun option. For example, on Thursday, Jan. 25, the Monsters play the Ontario Avalanche. The game starts at 7:45 p.m. but get there early because it’s Family Night hosted by the Fresno Chaffee Zoo. This means that people who arrive at the door in time can get a family pack for just $20, which includes two general admission tickets, two zoo passes, two sodas, and two public skate passes. It’s a good deal, and you get to see an exciting hockey game. As an additional bonus, you can wear winter accessories like scarves and ear muffs. Living in Fresno means sometimes those opportunities are rare. It’s the little things.
If you can’t make it tonight, you can still hit up other great theme nights, like Rodeo Night with the Fresno State Rodeo team. Did you ever think to combine rodeo with hockey? Well someone did, and God bless them. This event takes place Feb. 10 at 5:30 p.m. and will feature a mechanical bull. Let no one say there’s nothing to do in town. Show them this article and say, “MECHANICAL BULL RODEO HOCKEY GAME.”
Monsters in downtown Fresno
The big events are coming up in February when the Monsters take over Selland Arena. The last time the team played there was in 2013, but from Feb. 15-17 they’ll be there again, and they’re looking for the support of fans.
Earlier this month, Monsters head coach Kevin Kaminski issued what he called “a call to arms” for fans of both hockey and downtown Fresno. He asked that fans pack the house and prove that hockey belongs at Selland Arena. “Everyone wins by us coming back and helping to revitalize downtown Fresno. Local businesses, the hockey community, the players, and especially the amazing fans here in Fresno,” said Kaminski.
How to buy tickets
So, if you’re in the mood for some ice cold athleticism, tickets are on sale now. You can purchase tickets to the Selland Arena games here. They start at $13; group discounts are available, as well. You can check out the complete line up of remaining Fresno Monsters hockey games on their Facebook event page.
Even if you can’t make it to the game yourself, the Monsters encourage you to show your support by purchasing and donating tickets to a local non-profit.
