Leave it to a couple of moms to make sure the children of Fresno are fed. After realizing that childhood hunger was not a far-off problem, but happening daily right in their own backyard, Jessica Nazaroff and Shelby Dart decided to do something about it. Having built healthy, well-fed families of their own, they set out to fill the bellies of hungry kids in Fresno through their non-profit Feed Our Future.
The charitable partnership between the two friends was formed while on a walk in 2012. Ten days later, the pair would walk onto the Addams Elementary School campus and deliver bags of food to 50 children. Since that first delivery, a second school site has been added and the program now hands out food to hundreds of children on a weekly basis. In August, a third school will be added and Nazaroff and Dart hope to keep expanding because they’ve seen firsthand how great the need is.
Through its partnership with Community Food Bank, donations, and trips to the grocery store, Feed Our Future is able to provide kids living in dire circumstances with a weekend’s worth of food every Thursday. Often times, Nazaroff and Dart say, the kids who receive their help are living in motel rooms without access to so much as a can opener. So the food provided to them has to be non-perishable, simple to prepare, and as healthy as possible.
