Being a mom to picky eaters, I’m always looking for yummy places to eat out. That probably makes no sense, but since I’m usually eating Mac and Cheese for dinner (okay a bit of an exaggeration), I long for an adult meal that I can enjoy. The best time for me to go out is usually lunch. I’ve been to lots of random places around town, as I work all over town. I use to work in Riverpark for nearly 3 years, and I’m pretty sure I’ve tried just about all the restaurants in that area. Although, one can only eat Carl’s Jr so many times before longing for a homemade burger. Now, my job takes me to areas south of Olive. Guess what? There are some yummy places to eat at for lunch around our wonderful town!
Unlike my children, I am not too picky of an eater (although I do have weird disklikes-just ask my friends). I have many favorite foods, and it just depends on my mood as to what I want for lunch (which I’m sure is the case for lots of people). Some of my favorite types of food are Italian, Mexican, Greek and American. I mean really, who doesn’t love a good ole fashion steak? Okay, well, Vegetarians, that’s who. I am not a vegetarian, but I love vegetables. 😉
A while back I had some training at work, which took me to our main office for the day. For lunch I headed over to Vallarta, but just wasn’t in the mood for Mexican food. (Shocker.) As I stood looking around, I saw that there was a little Mediterranean Deli a couple of doors down called Izi Sandwich Shop & Deli. I decided to try it out.
From the outside, it looked like a small, unassuming place. Upon entering, it’s still small, but welcoming. The wall to the left is lined with Armenian food for purchase, like a grocery store. To the right, there is a table set up with all sorts of breads and sweets. Yum! In the center there are tables for customers to enjoy their lunch. A nice couple behind the counter let me take my time to study the menu. It was kind of weird to me because everything seemed very familiar, yet it was all different. I was seeing a lot of menu items that I recognized, but they were called something else than what I was use to. Then I knew why. I’m use to Greek food. To me stuffed grape leaves are called Dolmas. However, here they are called Yalanchi. Once I was able to put a name to the food, I was ready to order! I wanted to try a Gyro, but went with the Vegetarian plate because for some reason I was craving green things. I had the #10- Cheese Boreg (cheese wrapped in filo dough, then baked), Tabbouli (parsley type of salad), Yalanchi (stuffed grape leaves) and Hummos. It was all served with pita bread. Now here is where I’d like to tell you a little story. I went to Israel last summer and guess what I ate a lot of? Hummus and pita bread. When I got back home, I really didn’t want anymore hummus or pita bread. I’m pretty sure I’ve had it 2 or 3 times since I’ve been back. Probably only twice. So why I ordered a plate of hummus is beyond me. However, it was soooo good. The hummos (Armenian spelling) was so creamy, and with the warm pita bread….Delightful.
When I first entered the deli there were a couple of guys getting their lunches to go. As I sat there waiting for my food, the owner brought over my drink…On a tray! I felt fancy!!! For a very short time I was the only one in the restaurant. Before long, the place filled up, and fast! I enjoyed listening (and looking) at what people ordered, so I knew what to get for next time. Before I left, I even went over to a customer and asked her what she had ordered. It was like a Gyro, but all mixed up on the plate, without bread. Turns out that’s what it was…A Gyro salad, with rice. I made a note to try that next time.
The lunch I had at Izi’s Deli was refreshing. I left feeling full, but not stuffed. I also felt like I had eaten something very healthy. The owners were very welcoming and kind. Anytime I’m on that side of town again, I’m definitely heading that way. And you know what? I think that day will be tomorrow!
If you’d like to visit Izi’s Deli, the address is 4821 E Butler, Fresno CA. 93727. They are on the North/East corner of Butler and Chestnut.
Try them out sometime and let me know what you thought!! Also, if you’d like to suggest a yummy place for me to go, leave me a comment! I’m always looking for new restaurants. 🙂

Tiffiny, the next time you’re near Clovis and Herndon Avenues, check out Ararat Market on the northeast corner (next to Antonio’s Mexican Restaurant – another great place to eat).
