Zapp! Boom! Bam!
In less than 2 months, Fresno will be hosting a comic-con of its very own- ZappCon!!
You and I both know that Fresno has lots to offer. We have colleges, professional athletes, award winning schools, parades, fairs, concerts, pub crawls, sports games, farmer’s markets, Art Hop, good restaurants, festivals and much more. The people of FresYes love living here. Okay, well, I love living here. I like having different type of events, for the different type of people that make up the residents of our not so little town.
Fresno is diverse. One of the groups that makes up this wonderful city would be the geeks. (I say this with love.) Another group? The gamers. Yet still another group? Those who are not cool enough to be a geek or a gamer. 😉 I fall into that category. I dated a geek/nerd once. Albeit, a bit socially awkward, he was a pretty good boyfriend. Loyal, funny and best of all, smart. Anyway, he introduced me to a new world I knew nothing about. The people I met were kind, accepting and die hard about their games. For these people, there is an event that is targeted just for them. (But not only for them.)
October 18-19th, 2014 will be the first ever ZappCon. This event celebrates all things gaming, comics, animation, sci-fi and fantasy.
If you have never heard of ZappCon, let me share a little with you. The board members of ZappCon love their Fresno community. They support the growth of downtown, which is why the event will be held there. They have hosted days at the downtown ice rink, have helped with a carnival at Valley Children’s Hospital and have been part of other outreach areas. Over the summer they hosted a few teen events through the Fresno County Public Library, where they would discuss a popular teen novel, then do a related art/craft. You know me, I love the library connection!!! ZappCon is invested in FresYes and its wonderful residents.
One board member of ZappCon, Sarah Gonzales, speaks more to what the event is about:
“Put on by geeks for geeks. It will be big. We are talking comic books, special guests, serious gaming (including board game tournaments, miniature gaming battles, Pathfinder, Dungeons & Dragons, Magic, My Little Pony CCG and more!), cosplay, animation, sci fi, and fantasy – all that is cool, in and out of the mainstream.
Fresnans love to play. This central valley comic and gaming convention is long overdue and is a fun place to get together with like-minded people. With half a million people in the county, and plenty of awesomeness throughout, there is no reason for us to travel somewhere else to a fan convention to get together and celebrate our uniqueness. One of the best things about Fresno is it serves well as a hub for friends and family.
Do you think that you can only find people with your interests on the internet? Think again! There are thousands of people just like you that can and will come to a convention like ZappCon, especially since it’s not 8 hours away.
You may be poorly socialized. That’s okay.
You may be a fashionable pseudo geek with dark rimmed glasses. That’s okay.
You may be quirky and awkward. That’s still okay.
We’ve got a place for everyone! (Well, a convention…and sorry, it is only a weekend…and no, you can’t stay overnight…but you can stay real late, we won’t tell…but “day guy” will really hate “night guy” come Monday morning for gaming all night at the convention).”
Doesn’t this sound amazing?! I’m totally going to go!
So, even though this event is still 2 months away, I want to get the word out now. I want us to get excited and share about the convention!
Like ZappCon on Facebook. Find them on Twitter, Google+, Instagram and YouTube. Share this post on Facebook. Let’s help spread the word!!
If you have a friend/husband/wife/boyfriend/girlfriend/neighbor who loves all things pop culture, take them to this awesome event! Make a weekend of it! After all, you do have plenty of time to find a babysitter. 😉
