Today, the Fresno Grizzlies revealed the special uniforms they’ll be wearing every Tuesday this season and when the Taco Truck Throwdown comes around this summer. They also made a very cool surprise announcement.
In case you don’t know, the Taco Truck Throwdown is a yearly event that brings a bunch of taco trucks—and thousands of baseball + taco fans—to Chukchansi Park. If there’s one thing Fresno does better than pretty much anywhere else, it’s tacos.
The Grizzlies marketing team is very aware of this fact, so on Tuesday nights during the season—Taco Tuesdays— the team is renamed the Fresno Tacos, and they wear special taco-themed uniforms. Not surprisingly, this genius promotion has become a really big deal, and has garnered Fresno a lot of national attention, especially since the Fresno Grizzlies were the first team to adopt an alter ego in the minor league.
Today we got a special preview of this season’s Fresno Tacos uniforms, as well as some HUGE news for anyone who owns a phone and has ever used an emoji.
A Special Announcement
The Grizzlies announced that they are now the sole owners of the taco emoji. The one-and-only taco emoji. Who even knew you could buy emojis?
Not Taco Bell, apparently. According to Derek Franks, General Manager of the Grizzlies, the fast food chain was pivotal in getting the taco emoji onto phones—but for some reason after their success, they didn’t buy it.
So the Fresno Grizzlies/Tacos scooped it up for a mere $5,000 donation to the Unicode Consortium and brought it home to the Central Valley. Says Franks, “It is our gift to Fresno. It belongs here, in the Taco Capital of the World.”
If anyone—say, Taco Bell for example—wants to purchase the emoji from the Grizzlies, they’ve listed it at a re-sale price of $1 million, $5,000 of which would go toward a wardrobe for Cilantro Gomez, the Fresno Tacos mascot, with the remaining $995,000 going to Central Valley charities.
Fresno Tacos Uniform Revealed
As for the uniforms the team will wear when they take the field on Taco Tuesdays, they are zarape-inspired, and each hat worn by the players and by fans who purchase them will have a unique pattern on the bill.
A date hasn’t been set for Taco Truck Throwdown 7 yet, but you’ll have your chance to support the Fresno Tacos Tuesday nights at Chukchansi Park when the season starts in April.
Until then, get out there and eat tacos, man. You’re officially living in the Taco Capital of the World.
