This Saturday August 9 it’s that time of year-Ice Cream Zoofari!
I love the Ice Cream Zoofari. It’s a nice time to spend an evening at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo, with my kids, and eat all the ice cream we want.
We love the zoo, and the many events it puts on. Some of our favorites are Breakfast with the Animals, ZooBoo and Zoo Lights. They also put on Safari Night, Frogs & Fairytales and Dino Nite. These events are fun because it enhances a regular visit to the zoo. You can walk around, visit the animals, and play along with the theme. ZooBoo is fun because of all the kiddos are dressed up. Zoo Lights is nice because how often do you get to visit the zoo in the dark, with all the pretty lights? It’s absolutely beautiful. Ice Cream Zoofari is a favorite because it’s in the evening, so it’s not super hot (although one year it was sweltering), and we get to try different ice creams that we normally wouldn’t buy from the store. Win-win, right?
Some other reasons we love Ice Cream Zoofari….There is so much extra to do. They usually have volunteers painting faces. While it’s pretty basic, it’s a fun way to interact with people from the community and the kids love it. We also enjoy the live entertainment. Last year we saw Oklin Bloodworth, and I hope he’s there again. He gets the crowd involved, and has the kids laughing. I feel as if he’s watched my own children grow, as I discovered him when my daughter was only 2 years old-she’s almost 12 now.
This year the organizers have added something new. Instead of getting a plastic spoon at each station (if we choose a cup instead of a cone), we get a reusable, color changing spoon to use all night. I like that idea! However, if I know my kids, I know that they’ll choose a cone each time.
This event sometimes sells out, but they still have tickets left. You can call the Chaffee Zoo at 559-498-5910, or get tickets the day of the event-this Saturday, August 9th. It runs from 6-9pm. If you get there early enough, you’ll get a good parking space. However, if you get there a little later, you’ll get to enjoy the zoo as the sun goes down. One year we stayed until closing. As we were walking out, one station asked if I wanted what was left over. Um, I’m not going to pass up free ice cream, even though it felt weird walking through the zoo with a half full tub of Birthday Cake ice cream. But hey, my kids had good ice cream for their birthday parties that year. 🙂
I’m hoping to be there all night. If you happen to see me, come say hi! We can even take a selfie!

It’s true, I love the Greek Fest more! But to be fair, I really do love the Ice Cream Zoofari too! 🙂
