Some of you will no doubt be confused by my headline. But many of you are not. Because many of you are fans of the tv show “Gilmore Girls,” and either stood in line for 90 minutes at “Luke’s Diner” last week or are jealous of those who did and wish you had.
The “Luke’s Diner” in question was actually Yellow Mug Coffee, a cafe that opened on Champlain & Perrin in Fresno a couple of months ago. They, along with coffee shops across the country, partnered with Netflix to celebrate the upcoming “Gilmore Girls” revival by transforming into the beloved diner from the show for one day only.
So on October 5th, employees dressed up in Luke’s signature flannel shirt and backwards baseball cap and gave out free branded cups of Luke’s Diner coffee to 500 people who flocked to Yellow Mug. I personally woke up at 6:30 a.m., accidentally put on two different sneakers in the dark and waited in line for about 80 minutes for my sweet cup of java.
The whole experience was fantastically fun and had me wondering what Yellow Mug Coffee was like on a normal day. After all, it had to take special people to agree to the kind of madness that is hundreds of pop culture fanatics invading your shop. So instead of heading to Starbucks to work on Monday, I drove over to Yellow Mug. And guess what? It’s totally cute and charming and delicious when it’s playing itself, too.
I got a yummy iced mocha and was relieved to see that they had soy to substitute for milk. (I won’t name names, but some other local coffee shops don’t make such allowances for my lactose intolerance, so this made me happy!) I was most surprised to learn that Yellow Mug makes its own coffee blends from beans roasted in San Francisco. In fact, you can buy their blends by the bag (whole or ground).
In addition to their coffee drinks, Yellow Mug has a sizable food menu full of items that are guaranteed to be way fresher than whatever Starbucks reheats for you on a daily basis. They’ve got breakfast sandwiches, deli sandwiches, bagels and salads. I ordered a croissant with egg, my choice of cheese and turkey. It was sooo good! The best part was expecting a few thin turkey slices and instead getting thick carved turkey meat. Yum.
On the sweet side, they have goodies like Nutella bagels and pastries (including gluten-free). They also serve tea and smoothies. Got a dog? Yellow Mug is pup-friendly! They even keep a jar of biscuits on the counter for their canine customers!
Based on the time I spent there, it seems Yellow Mug has already (deservedly) become a community meeting place. So next time you’re in North Fresno, don’t go to Starbucks. And as I’m always fond of telling you, even if you aren’t in the neighborhood, you should make the drive over to check out Yellow Mug Coffee anyway! Follow them on Facebook and Instagram to see their latest menu items and specials.
